The panel filter presents air to the MAF in an even fashion, and it's this knowledge within the ECU that it uses to calculate the correct fuelling for the amount of air it has recorded as flowing through the metered portion of the MAF (if you look, it will have a "honeycomb" mesh, and only a couple of these are metered) By changing to a different style of filter, especially the cone-style, this flow of air is disrupted and is not as evenly distributed through the MAF, which can affect performance. Therefore - the best thing to do is keep the standard airbox, and put a free-flowing, quality panel filter in."
